Hospital mattress cover sizes: how to measure for a proper fit

There is no single hospital mattress size. How to measure length, width and depth, what to note about corners and zips, and what to send for a quote.

Hands fitting a white cover over the corner of a mattress

There is no single standard size for a hospital mattress cover: hospital, care-bed and stretcher mattresses vary by bed model and by manufacturer. The reliable way to get a cover that fits is to measure the mattress itself, its length, width and depth plus the shape of the corners, and have the cover cut to those figures.

Why not just order a standard size?

A cover that is too small strains its seams and zip and squeezes the foam. A cover that is too big creases, and creases on a patient surface become pressure points. Depth is where standard covers most often go wrong: a cover that is too shallow pulls off the corners every time the bed is moved or profiled.

How do you measure a mattress for a cover?

Measure the bare mattress, not the bed frame and not an old cover.

  1. Length: head end to foot end, along the middle of the top surface.
  2. Width: side to side, across the middle.
  3. Depth: the thickness, measured on the side rather than at a compressed edge.
  4. Corners: square or rounded? If rounded, note the radius or send a photo.
  5. Special shapes: cut-outs, tapered ends, or a sectioned mattress for a profiling bed.

Write the figures in centimetres, always in the same order: length × width × depth.

What else should you specify?

  • Closure: our standard PU hospital cover has a zip on two sides, so staff can fit and remove it without lifting the whole mattress. Tell us if you need a different arrangement.
  • Fabric weight: from 120 to 300 g/m². Lighter constructions are softer and more flexible; heavier ones are chosen for heavier use.
  • Use and laundry: where the cover will be used (hospital, care home, hotel) and how it will be cleaned and washed.
  • Labelling and packaging: your brand and label if you buy private label.

What about stretchers, incubators and cushions?

The same rule applies: measure the actual item. Stretcher covers are cut to the stretcher mattress, including cut-outs and rounded ends. Newborn and incubator mattresses are made to the inside dimensions of the incubator or cot. Foam cores can themselves be cut to size, with CNC cutting for shaped parts.

What should a quote request contain?

A complete request answers every question at once. For example:

  • Mattress: 200 × 90 × 14 cm, square corners
  • Quantity: 120 covers
  • Use: hospital ward, washed weekly at 80 °C
  • Closure: zip on two sides
  • Label: our own brand

The figures above are only an illustration; send your own.

How do you check the fit before the full order?

Before production starts we make a sample run, so you can put the real cover on your own mattress and check the fit. Once you approve it, that sample becomes the reference for every production run.
