A good waterproof mattress protector manufacturer can show you the fabric, the waterproof layer, the fit and the quality system behind the product, and will make it to your mattress sizes. For hospitals, care homes and distributors, five questions quickly separate a dependable supplier from a trader who only sells what is in a catalogue.
Do you need a protector or a mattress cover?
The two are different products. A protector is fitted over the top and sides of the mattress, sits under the sheet and is taken off for washing. A cover encloses the whole mattress with a zip. Where the mattress itself must be sealed against liquids, as on hospital beds, a PU hospital mattress cover is the usual choice. Our guide on how to choose a waterproof mattress cover explains where each one fits.
Which fabric should the protector be made from?
The fabric decides how the bed feels and how the protector copes with laundry:
- Cotton woven: a crisp, cool surface.
- Cotton jersey: softer, and it stretches over the mattress more easily.
- Microfibre: light, and it dries quickly after washing.
- 80% cotton terry: the most absorbent surface.
Anti-stress, antistatic and anti-fungal finishes can be added. Choose the fabric together with your laundry routine, because the protector comes off the bed and goes through the wash again and again.
How is a protector made waterproof?
For liquid protection we use a construction with a PU membrane, the same barrier used in our waterproof pillow protector and our hospital mattress cover. If a supplier quotes a waterproof rating, ask how it was measured. Our article on hydrostatic head and breathability explains what those numbers mean.
Can it be made to your mattress sizes?
Hospital, care and home beds come in many dimensions, so a protector that fits only standard sizes is a limitation. A good manufacturer works from your measurements: mattress length, width and depth, with the quantity per size. If you are not sure how to measure, see how to measure a mattress for a cover.
What should you ask the manufacturer?
- Which fabric and which waterproof construction is the protector made with, and can I have a sample?
- Can you produce to my mattress dimensions, and what information do you need?
- How should the protector be washed, and how does it hold up after repeated washing?
- Which quality system does the factory work under?
- What are your minimum order quantities, and can you make it under my own brand?
